Phil Jones manchester player sent home from England training due to injury

Phil Jones has returned to Manchester after the defender was forced to pull out of the England squad due to injury.

The Manchester United defender was assessed by the England medical team on Monday and deemed unfit to remain with the squad ahead of the Three Lions’ final two World Cup qualifiers. Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph has also returned to his club. It may be bad news for the Manchester clubs, but the injuries have led to Harry Winks getting his first call-up for England.

The young Tottenham star has been promoted from the England Under-21s team to fill out the senior squad. Gareth Southgate calls on Winks on the back of seven appearances for Tottenham this season. Winks played 90 minutes in the 4-0 win over Huddersfield and is a direct replacement for Delph.

United will be hopeful Jones’ injury is not serious with the centre-back playing every minute of his side’s unbeaten Premier League campaign. Southgate’s squad has now been trimmed down to 25 due to the injuries, but one of those Lions, Dele Alli, will not be available for the Slovenia game due to suspension. England play Slovenia on Thursday before travelling to Lithuania on Sunday. United do not play again until October 14 when they travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Premier League.
